What exactly is Fairtrade?
Fairtrade is an international initiative that gives cotton farmers and plantation workers financial security, fair prices and a strong negotiating position. Farmers join cooperatives (of which they are co-owners) so that they stand stronger together. They are supported in the areas of management, sustainability and safe working conditions. And independent inspectors monitor compliance. The result is better people, better cotton and better clothing.
Is Fairtrade sustainable?
Although Fairtrade's focus is on fair trade and the self-reliance of cotton farmers, the organisation also sets strict sustainability requirements. Clear rules apply to water management, soil quality and waste processing. Diseases and pests are combated with sustainable methods instead of harsh chemicals. That this has an effect is clearly shown by research carried out in India by the EU programme Switch-Asia:
- Fairtrade cotton has a 30% lower CO2 footprint than regular cotton.
- Fairtrade cotton farmers receive more training in organic farming than farmers who are not affiliated.
- It was established that there is no deforestation on the selected farms.
What does the Fairtrade label mean for me?
It's more than a logo on a label: it's a powerful statement. When you put on a Fairtrade garment, you know that the cotton was grown without child labour, without exploitation, with respect for people and nature. You wear the certainty that the farmer behind your clothing was given a fair chance. That feeling isn't in the cut or the colour, but in the choice you made. What the label concretely guarantees:
- A fair minimum price and an additional premium for the cotton farmer.
- A ban on child labour and unsafe working conditions.
- Independent monitoring throughout the entire cotton production chain.
- Environmentally friendly cultivation methods and responsible water use.
What quality can I expect?
Because Fairtrade farmers are paid fairly and guided in sustainable cultivation methods, they invest in their craft — and you can feel it. Fairtrade clothing stands for high-quality fabrics, pleasant wearing comfort and a lifespan that often exceeds that of regular clothing. Do follow the manufacturer's washing instructions, so you enjoy wearing it for years.
Which Suitable items carry the Fairtrade label?
You'll find the Fairtrade certification in our Suitable Respect collection: a carefully curated clothing line that combines style and responsibility. Each garment has a recognisable hangtag:
How do I recognise Fairtrade clothing?
Look for the Fairtrade logo: the blue and green mark with the stylised figure. That logo is only awarded after thorough, independent inspection. You'll find it on the label, the hangtag or the product page. Do you want to be sure a brand is certified? Then consult Fairtrade's cotton partners page.
